>Gori American Corner Brings Total American Corners in Georgia to Four
On June 9th, the fourth American Corner in Georgia opened in Gori. The opening was the second that day, following the opening of the American Corner in Khashuri earlier that same morning.
American Corners are an important U.S. State Department program, reaching out to the population of Georgia through libraries. As part of the program, the U.S. government renovates an existing library and furnishes it with modern computers, books, shelves, videos, a VCR, tapes, and other material, in addition to providing shelving, tables, chairs, a VCR, generator, and other supplies. The local Georgian government and library provides support in a variety of ways such as increased staffing. As Assistant Public Affairs Officer Wendy Kennedy noted, “This is a continuing partnership between a U.S. embassy and the Georgian public library. The U.S. government will continue to update and expand the collection of videocassettes and books at the Corner, so that the American Corner will grow and cover an even greater variety of subjects than it does today.”
The American Corner opening in Gori was attended by the Deputy Minister of Culture, the Governor of Shida Kartli, the head of the Georgian Library Association, and other dignitaries. Over a hundred locals attended the festivities, which included a recitation of an Emilie Dickinson poem, Georgian folk dancing, singing, and a tour of the new library facilities.
The Gori American Corner joins existing American Corners in Telavi, Tbilisi, and Khashuri.
