American Corner Opens in Khashuri
On June 9, 2004 at 11:00 AM, the third American Corner in Georgia opened at the Khashuri Central Public Library. Assistant Public Affairs Officer Wendy Kennedy from the U.S. Embassy cut the ribbon. Deputy Minister of Culture Tamar Kvariani and Shida-Kartli Regional Governor Mikheil Kareli also spoke. At the ceremony, three new computers were unveiled, joining the internet-connected computers already in the library as part of the Embassy’s IATP program. Head Librarian Rusudan Enjibadze and American Corner Coordinator Keti Metreveli will be overseeing the collection.
The Khashuri American Corner was the first of two American Corners opened in Shida Kartli that day. Another American Corner in the town of Gori was opened later in the day, bringing the number of American Corners in Georgia to four.
The American Corners program was conceived as a way for Georgians to deepen their understanding of the United States and the English language. For every American Corner, the U.S. government provides books, videos, and CD-ROMs to host Georgian libraries, which manage the collections themselves. The U.S. government also paid for reference books, English textbooks, works of fiction and poetry, and plans to donate more resources in the future. The American Corner will feature this material, books donated by private citizens, and of course direct access to American resources over the Internet. This facility is expected to be of great use to students of English, people interested in communicating with American friends and colleagues, and anyone who wants to learn more about the United States.
The library is located at 10 Dzneladze Street in Khashuri. It will be open from 10 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday, and from 1 PM to 5 PM Saturdays.
