American Embassy Celebrates Independence Day

The United States Embassy held its annual 4 th of July reception in the evening on July 1, 2004, at the Sheraton Mtechi Hotel in Tbilisi. Ambassador and Mrs. Miles hosted the event, which was attended by many distinguished guests, including former President of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze, first lady Sandra Roelofs, former U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Kenneth Yalowitz, and American jazz musician Michael Franks.

The highlight of the evening was the “Star-Spangled Banner”, as performed by both the Embassy choir (consisting of U.S. Embassy and USAID employees and families) and the Georgian Military Band. Following the national anthem, Ambassador Richard Miles cut the ceremonial six-by-four-foot American flag-shaped “birthday” cake.

The reception commemorated the 228 th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the United States from Great Britain. Over 700 guests attended the reception to mark the occasion.

The Tbilisi chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce also held its annual Independence Day picnic July 4th at Turtle Lake in Tbilisi. The picnic featured live music, a barbeque, games and a fireworks display. This was the fourth year the picnic has been held, and the second year at Turtle Lake. The Embassy extends its thanks to the sponsors of the picnic, to wit the Chamber of Commerce and its member businesses.
