Senior English Language Fellow Visits Remote Village of Mestia and Donates Books
Recently, Senior English Language Fellow Diane Millar traveled to Mestia in the Svaneti region of Georgia to meet with regional the English teachers and Svaneti leadership to discuss English teaching and future educational projects. Ms. Millar and Rusiko Tkemeladze, representing the British Council and the English Teachers’ Association of Georgia (ETAG) met with the regional English teachers in this isolated region to inform them about ETAG training sessions and educational reform issues. This remote region in the high Caucasus Mountains been plagued by regional troubles including devastating floods during the last year which swept away many bridges and roads, cutting off much of the area from the rest of Georgia.
During their October 18-20 visit to Svaneti, Ms. Millar and Ms. Tkemeladze met with Mr. Vakhtang Chkumiani, Head of Education for Svaneti, and Mr. Erekle Japaridze, Governor of Svaneti to discuss the possibilities of future projects. Ms. Millar also visited the local Mestia library, where she donated 37 English language books and cassettes. She also donated a number of posters depicting the United States to the regional teachers for use in their classrooms. Upon her return to Tbilisi, Ms. Millar sent information to the Svaneti teachers about various organizations they could join, such as the Teaching English Association, and sent them applications they could pass to their students, such as for the FLEX exchange program to the United States.
