Political Section Intern Visits Gori American Corner
On March 16, Samuel Schwabe gave a presentation to students in Gori about his experience serving on a peacekeeping operation in Kosovo with the Army National Guard. The discussion highlighted the distinction between America’s active duty, reserve, and national guard components of the U.S. military. The topic sparked questions as many young Georgians are still learning about their government’s reserve program which was passed by parliament in 2006. The discussion covered the training required for both a peacekeeping operation and what it was like to work in a multinational military setting. Students were also interested in what prompted Mr. Schwabe to enlist in the Army National Guard. Mr. Schwabe said that his decision to enlist in the National Guard stemmed from a desire to serve, a family history of military service, and educational benefits. Mr. Schwabe closed his presentation by drawing attention to the fact that over 1,200 Georgian soldiers have served in Kosovo since 1999.
