Strong interest in embassy tbilisi’s 6th annual u.s. education fair
On November 16, 2007, hours before the state of emergency was lifted, the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi held its 6th Annual U.S. Education Fair at Tbilisi State University (TSU). A day-long event, Ambassador John Tefft, Deputy Education Minister Bela Tsipuria, and TSU Rector Gia Khubua opened the Fair in front of a packed hall of students, professors and university administrators from throughout Tbilisi. Individual presentations focused on USG exchange programs by IREX, American Council and the Embassy; writing university admission essays by our Senior English Language Fellow; student visa procedures by consular staff; and personal accounts of student life in the U.S. by current and former Fulbright exchange students. Our two student advising centers, the Center for International Education and the Kvali Education Advising Center, also gave presentations. The Fair concluded with a raffle and with the opportunity for students to visit booths of U.S. university programs from as far afield as West Virginia and Kazakhstan, to learn more about possibilities for study in the U.S. and at U.S. institutions. A number of FLEX alumni volunteered to help staff the Fair. Public Television and Alania TV reported on the Fair in their evening news broadcasts; Alania’s first news broadcast after the state of emergency was lifted and the network was allowed to broadcast news again.
