American Corners students learn about the United States' struggle for and celebration of independence
Backyard fireworks, potluck picnics and three-legged races were some of the 4th of July traditions American Corners students found interesting when learning about U.S. Independence Day. Knowing more about the history and seeing the excitement for celebrating independence day in the U.S., some Georgian students expressed hope that Georgian Independence Day traditions will grow, noting that the holiday is only 15 years old. From June 20-27, PAO interns and FLEX alumni shared a 4th of July presentation with all the American Corners in Georgia. Students learned about the struggle for freedom in the U.S., saw pictures and heard stories about how Americans celebrate their independence, discussed how U.S. Independence Day and Georgian Independence Day are alike and different, and got a glimpse of how American ex-pats and FLEX alumni celebrate the 4th of July in Georgia. At the end of the presentation students took a short quiz about historic details of U.S. Independence with an average score of 82% for the over 80 students who took this quiz. After the quiz, the presenters taught students some traditional American 4th of July games. Students enjoyed a water balloon toss, an egg (ping pong ball) and spoon relay, and a three-legged race. The presenters stressed that these games also teach focus, patience and teamwork.
