Ambassador Tefft Awards Winners of Domestic Violence Essay Contest
“I want to live in a new Georgia, with people of high morals free from domestic violence,” Nana Lartsuliani, a 9th grade student from the Ambrolauri Public School in Racha (mountainous region of Georgia) wrote in her essay on domestic violence. Nana was one of 104 high school students - and one of five finalists – who participated in an essay contest, “Domestic Violence- Sin, Crime, or…?” hosted by the Embassy Public Affairs and Political sections in cooperation with the NGO, the Anti-Violence Network of Georgia. On June 20, Ambassador John Tefft, in a ceremony at the Embassy, presented certificates, i-Pods and books to the 5 finalists hailing from Racha, Adjara, Guria and Kakheti. The ceremony was attended by parents, NGO representatives and Georgian government officials working on anti-violence issues, who congratulated the winners and called for the continuation of the anti-violence awareness campaign. The award ceremony was covered by major TV outlets: Georgian Broadcasting Company, TV Mze, Rustavi 2, and Ajara TV. The contest was held as part of a series of U.S. Embassy programs on “taking action to stop violence against women.”
