Tbilisi Sight of the Eighth Regional Forum on Export Controls, May 16–18, 2006
May 16-18, 2006, the Eighth Central Asia and the Caucasus Regional Forum on Export Controls will take place in Tbilisi. The forum’s theme is Strategies for Optimizing Export Control Operations. The Forum is funded by the U.S. State Department and co-hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Ministry of Economic Development of Georgia. U.S. Ambassador John Tefft and Georgia’s Minister of Economic Development, Irakli Chogovadze, will give the keynote addresses at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, May 16th at the Courtyard Marriot, Tbilisi.
The Export Control Forum will be attended by mid and senior level officials from Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Ukraine who are responsible for national export control and border security systems. Presenting at the Forum will be officials from Hungary, Kazakhstan, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, the United States, the European Union and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The Export Control Forum provides an opportunity for officials to meet with counterparts from other countries and build on the results of previous forums and bilateral efforts. Seven Export Control Forums have been held since 1995, the most recent taking place in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2003. Many countries in the Eurasia region have enacted export control laws and have systems in place to administer these laws. Officials will share experiences and best practices as well as explore opportunities for further collaboration.
