Ambassador Tefft and MIA Officials Detonate Car for U.S.- Sponsored Forensics Training
Experts from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, on behalf of the United States Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL), are training 26 Georgian investigators and scientific forensic experts in post-blast investigative techniques. The two-week course focuses on correct investigative and forensics procedures so that an explosive device can be reconstructed in order to pursue a more successful investigation and prosecution.
The course includes not only classroom instruction, but also the use of real explosives to destroy four automobiles. The students will then be able to actually collect evidence and reconstruct the devices used in the detonation.
On Thursday, May 18, 2006, U.S. Ambassador John Tefft will be at the explosives range at approximately 10:30 to set off the first explosive device for the training course. This training is part of a multi-year, multi-million dollar training and assistance effort by the U.S. Department of State to improve the capacity and professionalism of Georgian law enforcement.
