The U.S. Embassy in Georgia Announces The Democracy Commission Small Grants Program Competition for 2008

Tbilisi, Georgia-- The U.S. Embassy in Georgia announces the opening of the Democracy Commission Small Grants Program Competition for 2008.
The Commission, chaired by the Ambassador and represented by the Public Affairs Officer, will award grants up to 24,000 U.S. Dollars to indigenous Georgian non-profit, non-governmental and educational organizations that support the following initiatives:

  • Economic development (empowerment with self-sufficiency, microfinance, entrepreneurship and language skills; development of media operations; promotion of the culture of philanthropy.)
  • Human rights and ethnic and minority rights (minorities’ economic, social and cultural integration within Georgia; support for human rights in the conflict zones; support for the rights of women and disabled people.)
  • Conflict resolution (public diplomacy; flow of information between conflict-affected communities.)
  • Transparency in government and Rule of law (legal reform / check-and-balance promotion; anti-corruption awareness campaigning; increasing civil society involvement in the decision-making process; public awareness through civic and media education.)

The deadline for submission of applications is February 1, 2008. While final approval of grants is carried out in Washington, the technical review process may last three to six months. Completed applications shall be mailed or hand delivered to the Public Affairs Office, U.S. Embassy, 11 George Balanchine Street, Tbilisi 0131, Georgia.
