U.S. Embassy Opens American Corner in Zugdidi
Monday, April 30, 2007, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, John F. Tefft, will officially open the new American Corner at Zugdidi Central Public Library. The Zugdidi American Corner is the seventh American Corner to open in Georgia. There are over 400 American Corners worldwide.
The Zugdidi American Corner is a joint program between the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section and the Zugdidi Public Library. The Corner functions as a small American library and cultural center. It offers books on American government, history, culture, literature, and American films and music. The Corner also contains educational advising materials and test preparation manuals (SAT, TOEFL, GMAT) to help Georgian students prepare for study in the U.S. Computers and internet are available. In its role as a cultural center, the Zugdidi American Corner hosts speakers, clubs and classes to help citizens improve their English and learn more about the U.S.
The American Corners Program in Georgia started in 2003 when the first American Corner opened in Telavi Central Public Library. American Corners are also located at Tbilisi State University, the Tbilisi Youth Palace, Gori Central Public Library, Khashuri Central Public Library, and Batumi Central Public Library. All American Corners are open to the public free of charge.
