U.S. Ambassador John Tefft Opens the Annual International Conference on American Studies

Tbilisi - On May 3 at 12:00 p.m. U.S. Ambassador John Tefft will open the 9th Annual International Conference on American Studies.  The conference opening will be held at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University Javakhishvili Conference Hall (1, Chavchavadze Ave., University building 1).

The conference will continue at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University until May 5, 2007 and is dedicated to American-Georgian Relations: History and Present Time. Along with the main topic, different fields of American Studies will be discussed during the conference, including history, politics, arts, literature, economy, law, education, ideology, health care, journalism, architecture, music, and art. Over 170 Georgian and U.S. speakers will present scholarly papers. Traditionally, conference materials will be published in the Journal of American Studies. 

The schedule of the conference opening on May 3 is as follows:

Vasil Kacharava, Professor, President of the Georgian Association for American Studies will introduce the guest speakers:

  • John F. Tefft, Ambassador of the United States of America to Georgia
  • Kote Gabashvili, Member of the Parliament of Georgia, Head of the Committee of Foreign Affairs
  • Rowena Cross-Najafi, Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy
  • David Zalkaliani, Head of the Department of Global Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Guguli Magradze, Full Professor; Member of the Academic Board of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University; Member of  Parliament, Committee of Education, Science, Culture and Sport
