USAID Groundbreaking Ceremony to Take Place in Didi Dighomi

TBILISI – On Thursday, May 31, at 4:00 p.m., U.S. Ambassador John Tefft, USAID Mission Director Bob Wilson, and Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava will participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for USAID’s new office that will be located on the grounds of the U.S. Embassy compound in Didi Dighomi.

The new location will allow USAID to work more closely with Embassy colleagues and deliver better, more effective assistance to Georgia.

A joint venture between an American company, Framaco, and two Turkish companies, Epik and Metis, is carrying out the construction.  The construction will take approximately one year.  USAID is currently located in the old U.S. Embassy building at 25 Atoneli Street in Tbilisi.

2007 marks USAID’s fifteenth year in Georgia.  Since 1992, the American people, through USAID, have invested more than $800 million in Georgia.  USAID’s first assistance to Georgia was providing food, clothing, and medicine to the thousands of displaced Georgians fleeing Abkhazia.

Since 1992, USAID has expanded its program from providing emergency assistance to supporting projects with longer term goals in the areas of health, education, democracy, economic growth, and energy.  More than 20 projects worth $44 million a year are currently being implemented.

In the future, USAID will continue to collaborate with the Georgian people on issues that matter most to them, such as quality healthcare, an independent judiciary, creating a skilled workforce, and facilitating economic opportunity in Georgia’s regions.
