MCC CEO to Visit Georgia
Ambassador John Danilovich, Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), will travel to Georgia from June 13 to June 15, 2007 to review implementation of the projects being financed by MCC as well as to meet with high-level government, civic and business leaders.
The MCC-Georgia Compact, a $295 million dollar aid package from the United States, is designed to reduce poverty in Georgia, particularly in rural areas, through projects and programs that promote economic growth.
Ambassador Danilovich will be in Naniani to inspect progress on gas pipeline repairs being funded by MCC. He he will travel to Akhalkalaki to talk with government and community leaders there about the roads project in Samtskhe-Javakheti. Once repairs and upgrades are finished, the roads project will better connect farmers in rural Georgia to critical markets in Tbilisi and allow for better integration of that region with the rest of Georgia.
“The reports show that tremendous progress and achievements have been made in fulfilling the goals of the Compact,” Ambassador Danilovich said. “Along with the Government of Georgia, the Millennium Challenge Corporation is determined to replace poverty with prosperity in sustainable and transformative ways.”
MCC signed a five-year Compact with the Government of Georgia in September 2005. The Compact program is designed to rehabilitate key regional infrastructure by improving transportation for regional trade, ensuring a reliable supply of energy, and improving the delivery of regional and municipal services. In addition, the program will develop regional enterprises by funding investment and increasing productivity in farms, agribusinesses and other enterprises to increase jobs and rural income.
The Millennium Challenge Georgia Fund (www.mcg.ge) is administering the program, with oversight from the mixed governmental/non-governmental/private sector Supervisory Board and a civil society Stakeholders’ Committee.
Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is a U.S. government corporation based on the principle that aid is most effective when it reinforces sound political, economic, and social policies that promote poverty reduction through economic growth.
